What is Tungsten Carbide? 

Tungsten carbide is a composite material made up of tungsten, a hard material, and a binder metal like cobalt. The performance characteristics of this composite are determined by its hardness, transverse rupture strength, and fracture toughness. The hardness and transverse rupture strength of WC is determined by its content of cobalt (Co) and grain size. Cobalt is used as a binder metal to fill the spaces between the grains and increases toughness when required. The tungsten carbide grains typically range in size from less than 0.2 micrometres up to several micrometres with cobalt filling in the gaps between each grain. For extra toughness, the cobalt content can reach 30%, while wear resistance is maximized with lower cobalt content and smaller grains in the nanocrystalline range of fewer than 0.2 micrometres.
